The TERENA Executive Committee and TERENA Secretariat staff are saddened to learn that Klaus Ullmann passed away unexpectedly on Friday 25 March 2011, at age 62. Twenty-five years ago Klaus Ullmann was one of the founders of TERENA (then called RARE); he served as vice president of the association from June 1986 until May 1988 and as president from May 1988 until May 1992.
Klaus Ullmann was appointed general manager of DFN, the German national research networking organisation, when that organisation was founded in 1984. In the same year he started his contributions to European collaboration in research networking, which he continued in many different functions after his membership of the RARE Executive Committee, notably as president of DANTE and as leader of many European collaboration projects, lastly as chairman of the Executive Committee of the GN3 (GEANT) project. Throughout all these years Klaus Ullmann was one of the most influential personalities in European research networking, and he put his mark on the development of our community. He will be sadly missed.
