A proposal for new terms of reference was introduced during the fifth TF-Storage meeting, held on March 4-5, 2010 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, hosted by SURFnet, the Dutch National Research and Education Networking (NREN) organisation. Participants expressed their interest in continuing the task force in the current style and format, and they accepted the new terms without changes.
The two-year mandate of TF-Storage expired in February 2010, explained Jan Meijer (UNINETT), the current task force chair. The new terms of reference will be reviewed by the TERENA Technical Committee before they come into effect.
Technical updates
The two-day meeting started with Cisco's presentation on Next Generation Data Centre Networks, during which participants learned about the latest trends and technical solutions in transport protocols and unified storage equipment for data centres. Participating NRENs gave updates on their national activities, which included the Czech national e-infrastructure, SURFnet's storage pilot, and HEAnet's multimedia sharing application.
The second day focused on project presentations and storage systems related to traditional, cloud, and peer-to-peer storage solutions and potential combinations. Invited speakers presented use cases on the FEDERICA (Federated E-infrastructure Dedicated to European Researchers Innovating in Computing network Architectures) project, the NEON (Northern Europe Cloud Computing) project by UNINETT and the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library of the Netherlands) project on the digitisation of historical newspapers.
The storage systems/applications presented included 'FileSender', a TF-Storage spin-off application, the NORDUshare platform based on BitTorrent technology, and the Chelonia lightweight self-healing distributed storage system.
Upcoming TF-Storage meetings
TNC 2010 will be the venue for the next TF-Storage, which will be a half day session on 3 June 2010 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The autumn TF-Storage meeting will take place in Poznan, Poland on September 9-10, 2010, kindly hosted by PSNC, the Polish NREN.
