  19. Through the National Council of Science and Technology which is a secretariat under de Vicepresident of the Republic of Guatemala, RAGIE has received recognition as the organization that heads the country´s effort in establishing academic and research networks. There are, however, no formal ties.
  20. Our bylaws indicate that any institution that has research and/or education as a principal component of its function, can be a member of RAGIE. At this moment we have only educational institutions (7) but the door is open for other types of organizations. the governing body is the Directive Council composed of 5 elected members by the General Assembly. Because most of RAGIE´s members are currently on the Directive Council, decision making is very easy. As membership grows, of course the highest authority is the General Assembly.

  37. Our link to RedCLARA has changed changed to an STM-1 which will allow for immediate and future growth in BW. Currently, because of the prohibitive costs, we are only using 18 Mbps. One way we are hoping to increase the BW is to also provide, through the STM-1, commodity internet for our members. This will provide some overhead which will allow us to acquire a higher BW to RedCLARA. The University system in Guatemala is different from most countries in that all are based in the capital city. However most of the universities have campuses throughout the country. At this time only the campuses in the capital city are connected and we hope that in 2010 we start the process of linking the other campuses, particularly in the most populated areas. For this, we are looking into acquiring Dark Fiber as this promises to be much more cost effective.
