AARNet Pty Ltd (ACN 084 540 518) is the not-for-profit company that operates the AARNet network which provides high-capacity Internet services to Australia's universities, research institutions including CSIRO, DSTO and ANSTO, and certain other related organisations as permitted by the AARNet Access Policy. Shares in AARNet Pty Ltd (AARNet) are held by thirty-eight Australian universities and the CSIRO, together known as the Members. AARNet is a licensed Australian telecommunications carrier (Nr 61 under the Telecommunications Act 1997 Cth).

  36. 2010 will continue a number of technological changes in AARNet's network. We have implemented or expect to implement within the next 12 months the following major changes:

    - Light the fibre system to Western Australia (approx. 1500km of fibre), and install an extra 700km of dark fibre to a remote site which is one of the candidate sites for the Square Kilometre Array;
    - Trial 40Gbps DWDM transmission;
    - Enable Dynamic Lightpath capability on the AARNet optical network;
    - Implement VPLS capability as an alternative technology to the Optical Private Networks built on a mesh of PtP circuits currently in use for customer campus interconnectivity;
    - work with the government's National Broadband Network rollout to acquire and light additional fibres, especially to regional and underserved areas, including Tasmania.
