  19. The Telecoms Regulatory Authority (TRA) in the UAE has allocated funding to Khalifa University in order to begin a national NREN. Khalifa University, Zayed University, UAE University, IAT and HCT are members of the consortium. Invitations to all other UAE educational institutions has been offered and network expansion is expected rapidly. Telecom networking remains very expensive in the UAE and the national operator has allocated preferential pricing for educational centres to allow connectivity to the NREN.

  36. The Ankabut project is the National Research and Education Network (NREN) in the UAE. Ankabut’s function is to link up universities, schools and public institutions with telecoms and data communication over fibre and IP. The network has connected 25 campuses and is rapidly expanding in the areas of networking and service provision. Ankabut works in partnership with universities and operators to provide the network infrastructure. Provide a selection of services that include, but not limited to: voice and video conferencing, national federated SSO, inter-library systems, cloud computing, and offsite disaster recovery.

    Ankabut is a non-profit making start-up organisation designed to increase the collaboration between universities and push forward education in the UAE as a whole. Ankabut is a financed, lean and a fast moving project in a challenging environment. It is currently requests help and assistance in drive forward ideas-and-concepts to make a real difference in the academic environment of the UAE and GCC region.

    Ankabut will be measure upon:

    • Connecting universities to the advance communication IP network
    • Establishment a forum to discuss education and research collaboration
    • Encourage collaborative research within the UAE
    • Provide a mechanism to share lectures
    • Encourage inter-library access
    • Increase collaboration with international universities
    • Link existing remote campuses in the UAE with main campuses abroad
    • Provide application on the IP network
    • Be on-time with the project schedule
    • Maintain financial discipline
    • Provide a mechanism for accurate reporting.
