AARNet Pty Ltd (ACN 084 540 518) is the not-for-profit company that operates the AARNet network which provides high-capacity Internet services to Australia’s universities, research institutions including CSIRO, DSTO and ANSTO, and certain other related organisations as permitted by the AARNet Access Policy. Shares in AARNet Pty Ltd (AARNet) are held by the thirty-eight Australian universities and the CSIRO, together known as the Members. AARNet is a licensed Australian telecommunications carrier (Nr 61 under the Telecommunications Act 1997 Cth).
      AARNet’s Chief Executive Officer reports to the Board of Directors. A separate body, the AARNet Advisory Committee (AAC), represents the interests of the Members and is a source of advice on policy and business matters. Regional Network Organisations, which are generally state based, elect one representative to the AAC.

    11. 2009 will be a year of technological changes at AARNet. We're planning to:

      - Light the fibre system to Western Australia, where one of the candidate sites for the Square Kilometer Array is located (approx. 1500km of fibre)
      - Trial 40Gbps DWDM transmission
      - Enable Dynamic Lightpath capability on the AARNet optical network
      - Implement VPLS capability as an alternative technology to the Optical Private Networks built on a mesh of PtP circuits currently in use for customer campus interconnectivity
