In this section, reference is made to the various levels of education. For this, use has been made of the ISCED classification scheme; more information about this scheme is here. For the purposes of this survey, 'University' level corresponds to ISCED levels 5 and 6; 'higher/further education' corresponds to ISCED level 4; 'secondary education' corresponds to ISCED levels 2 and 3 and 'primary education' to ISCED level 1.

1.1 Estimate of the percentage of the institutions in each category that are served by the NREN (even if not all institutions receive the same services)
Type of institution Allowed to serve this type of institution? % of all institutions of this type served by the NREN
Universities (x)Yes ( )No 80.9
Institutes of higher/further education (x)Yes ( )No 10.0
Research institutes (x)Yes ( )No 80.0
Secondary schools (x)Yes ( )No 10.0
Primary schools (x)Yes ( )No 5.0
Libraries, Museums, National Archives (x)Yes ( )No 2.0
Hospitals (other than University hospitals) (x)Yes ( )No 3.0
Government departments (national, regional, local) (x)Yes ( )No 50.0
Others (x)Yes ( )No

Others:
* Private companies for their research acivities only
* International research organisations

Has your AUP been changed in the last year?
( )Yes (x)No
If the AUP has been changed in the past year, brief summary of changes:
1.4 Rough estimate of the methods by which the different types of institutions are connected to the network:
% connected to a PoP on the NREN directly or through a MAN managed by the NREN % connected to the NREN via a regional or metropolitan network managed by a third party % connected to the NREN via or behind another, connected institution % connected to the NREN in another way Total (should be 100%)
Universities 95.0 5.0 0.0 0.0 100
Institutes of higher/further education 10.0 90.0 0.0 0.0 100
Research institutes 90.0 0.0 10.0 0.0 100
Secondary schools 1.0 99.0 0.0 0.0 100
Primary schools 1.0 99.0 0.0 0.0 100
Others 50.0 50.0 0.0 0.0 100
1.5 Usable capacity of the connections between regional or metropolitan networks (either managed by the NREN or by a third party) and the NREN PoPs/routers (in case (some of) the clients are connected through such networks):
Capacity of the connection to the NREN PoP/router Number of connections to from the MAN to the PoPs/routers at this capacity
34 Mbit/s E3 3
100 Mbit/s Fast Ethernet (incl. 2 * 100 Mbit/s) 9
1 Gbit/s Gigabit Ethernet (incl. 2 * 1000 Mbit/s) 5
remark: # MAN networks connected: 11
1.6 Total number of connections to the NREN for each institutional category (note: this is the usable bandwidth)
Sites of: Total number of connections % connected through ISDN or lower % connected at up to 2 Mbit/s % connected at >2 Mb and =< 10 Mb/s % connected at > 10 Mb/s and =< 100 Mb/s % connected at > 100 and < 1000 Mb/s % connected at 1 Gb/s % connected at >1 Gb and < 10 Gb/s % connected at 10 Gb or above

1.7 Does the NREN currently support IPv6 or does it have plans for that?
(x)Yes ( )No
1.7.1 Support for IPv6 as a pilot service was / will be introduced

Remarks or further information regarding this section

1.1 - Universities: in 2006 we added "Schools of higher education" (ISCED level 5 or even 6) to this category instead of "Institutes of/for higher education". This in contrast with 2005 and previous years (=> drop in coverage rate universities & institutes of higher education)

1.6- 2 remarks:
* Number of connections = number of connected institutions (~some institutions have more than 1 fysical connection but those are counted as one here)
* Only directly connected institutions are counted here (not those via MAN or other)
