Brief description of the governing structure:
SUNET has a Board composed mainly of representatives of the universities
The board takes advise from a technical reference group (TREF) and by a group for research and development (SPIRIT).
Between board meetings, SUNET is managed by two executive officers, one employed by the Swedish Research Council in Stockholm and one by Umeå University.
Otherwise, SUNET has no personnel of its own. Longterm agreements with different universities and other organizations are used to get the necessary work done. Most important, the Network Operating Center is run by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm.
Involvement in cctld or domain names:
In the past, SUNET has to some extent been involved in the development of the Swedish ccTLD. Now, a separate organisation handles these matters and SUNET sticks to university business.
As for RIPE, people from the network operation center employed by SUNET take part in the RIPE meetings and in some cases people with connections to SUNET participate in working groups, for example the DNS Working Group.

Remarks:
There is no strict definition of what constitutes a University. Some of our universities are sometimes called 'university colleges' - the difference being that they have less levels in the academic program or are more specialized than the more established universities. After checking with our national agency for higher education we conclude that 20 of the 40 should qualify as universities.
