Join the OpenCloudMesh initiative!

GÉANT Association is proud to announce an ambitious project that for the first time links together researchers and universities in Europe, the Americas and Asia via a series of interconnected, secure private clouds. OpenCloudMesh, a joint international initiative under the umbrella of the GÉANT Association, is built on ownCloud’s open server-to-server sharing application programming interface (API). It delivers universal file access through a globally interconnected mesh of research clouds, without sacrificing any of the advantages in privacy, control and security an on-premises cloud provides. Leading research organisations from all over the world have joined the initiative and more participants are welcome.

2014 Compendium shows positive trends

The fourteenth annual GÉANT Association Compendium of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in Europe is now available. The Compendium documents the work currently being done by NRENs, examining the different contexts in which they operate and explaining important trends in research and education networking that concern them. It’s an authoritative reference work for policy makers, funders, NRENs and their users.

Register now! Network Performing Arts workshop programme now available

The preliminary programme is now available and registration is open for the eighth Network Performing Arts Production (NPAP) workshop, which will be held on 4-6 May 2015 in London, UK. The action-packed programme will combine performing arts and the latest networking technology and will include a ground-breaking evening performance by students from the Royal College of Music.

2015 Community Awards: nominations welcome

Nominations are invited for the 2015 research and education networking Community Awards. These awards are intended to show gratitude and respect to teams or individuals who have shared their ideas, expertise and time with the community, often voluntarily and through good will. Up to three nominees may be selected by a panel of judges from the GÉANT Association community. The winner(s) will be presented with a small personal gift on Thursday 18 June during the closing plenary session of the 2015 Networking Conference (TNC15) in Porto, Portugal. Nominations can be submitted online until midnight on 29 March 2015.

The nomination procedure that was introduced and proved successful in 2014 has been slightly improved for this year, with fewer questions on the submissions form and a longer period in which to nominate candidates.

TCS certificate service updates its SHA security advice

As announced in November, the GÉANT Association's Amsterdam office (formerly TERENA) and Comodo have made it possible to order new, more secure SHA-2 (Secure Hash Algorithm-2) supported certificates via the current TCS certificate service. These replace the old and SHA-1 certificates now that deprecation of this key cryptographic tool has become a reality, with the first errors and warnings visible on the Internet.

First TF-WebRTC meeting defines scope and targets

The first meeting of the newly established task force on WebRTC (Web-based real-time communications) was a success. Thirty-five participants and invited speakers representing 13 NRENs (national research and education netwoking organisations) and 12 other organisations, and including individuals active in IETF standardisation and WebRTC development, discussed the latest developments in WebRTC and agreed the scope for the new task force.

The TF-WebRTC meeting was hosted by RENATER in Paris, France on 15 December. It was followed by a commercial WebRTC Conference and Expo that also took place in Paris, for which task force participants received a discount on the fee.

GÉANT Association signs contract with new Certificate Authority

Following a tendering process that started in early 2014, GÉANT Association has selected DigiCert to be its new Certificate Authority (CA) provider for at least the next two years. DigiCert, a US-based company, will power the popular TERENA Certificate Service (TCS).

New Board elected to take GÉANT Association into the future

The General Assembly (GA) of the GÉANT Association elected a new Board during its meeting on 11 December 2014 in Zagreb. A majority of 1104 out of a possible 1155 votes were present or represented. The new Board will meet for the first time on 15 January 2015.

TNC15 early-bird registration now open

GÉANT Association invites you to register now to benefit from the early-bird discount on participation in TNC15. The early-bird discount of € 100 is available until 23 February 2015. This means that the early registration fee is € 550 (excluding VAT). After 23 February, registration will continue at the full cost of € 650 (excluding VAT).

Registration is open earlier than in previous years in order to allow extra time to plan your travel. TNC15 will be held between 15-18 June 2015 in Porto, Portugal, hosted by FCT | FCCN, Portugal's unit for the operation of the National Research and Education Network within the funding agency for science and research in Portugal.
