The GÉANT network was held up as a best-practice example by consultant Con Sadee during the TERENA General Assembly (GA) meeting held in Maastricht, Netherlands, from 5-6 June 2013. To stimulate feedback from the TERENA community, he presented an overview of early results of a study into the feasibility of creating a pan-European backbone network for public administration. A first version of the report will be available for feedback in July and further input will be sought in an Autumn workshop.

In addition, Patrick Donath gave a presentation about RENATER's collaboration with the new French public administration network, Jean-Luc Dorel briefed GA participants on progress with preparation of the Horizon2020 programme, and Andreas Dudler, speaking on behalf of the Reykjavik Group, urged the community to converge more quickly on a proposal for an umbrella organisation. Christoph Graf (SWITCH) reported on the TERENA Advisory Council meeting of 3 June, where the establishment of NREN-Chief Security Officers and MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) were discussed: he raised awareness among GA members about opportunities for the community and TERENA to follow up on these.

Having served the maximum of six years as TERENA Vice-President for the Technical Programme, Christoph Graf stepped down from the TERENA Executive Committee and Valter Nordh (SUNET) was elected in this role. Alberto Pérez Gómez (RED.ES) also stepped down after six years and was replaced as Member at Large by Erwin Bleumink (SURFnet). The voting was unanimous.

ECI Telecom was admitted as a new associate member of TERENA, effective from receipt of the membership fee for the first year, and the GA noted that Google had met all the requirements and is now an associate member.

The General Assembly approved the TERENA Annual Report and the association’s audited accounts for 2012.
