To the clouds and beyond: GÉANT showcase session at TNC15
The clouds session at TNC15 featured a panel discussion with cloud providers.

The GÉANT clouds session at this year's networking conference, TNC15, gathered more than a hundred interested participants from cloud providers and national research and education network (NREN) organisations. Presentations from the GÉANT clouds team outlined the scope and goals of the GÉANT clouds activity, including the cloud services catalogue, NREN adoption support and the ongoing IaaS (infrastructure as a service) tender process.

This was followed by a panel discussion with representatives from six different cloud providers. Speed, flexibility and cost were among the chief advantages of cloud services highlighted by the providers. When asked about the peculiarities of the research and education sector, the providers pointed out that while the research and education networking community is quick to take up new technologies, we can sometimes be slow in making decisions.

According to the IaaS providers, the ongoing tender process will, when completed, signify a huge leap forward for the European research and education community when it comes to the transparency, cost predictability and ease of uptake of IaaS services. With a pan-European network, federated identity across Europe, common requirements and collaboration through GÉANT, European NRENs are in a strong position to take up cloud services on a large scale.
