NRENum.net-eduCONF alliance agrees steps towards unified dialling in video communications
New NRENum.net and eduCONF® service logos were presented for the first time at the workshop by Rui Ribeiro (left) and Péter Szegedi (right).

Actions towards unified dialling in videoconferencing were agreed at a joint working-group meeting of NRENum.net and eduCONF® that was held in Amsterdam on 18-19 March 2013. These actions will aid the development of both these services and facilitate their cooperation, with unified dialling as the mutual objective.

More than 20 participants from across Europe and the United States attended the NRENum.net-eduCONF joint workshop hosted by TERENA. They discussed how ‘virtual’ numbers generated by eduCONF could be handled by NRENum.net to facilitate reachability between valid Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), Global Dialling System (GDS) and eduCONF Direct Dialling (eDDi) numbers.

Background: NRENum.net and eduCONF

NRENum.net is an end-user telephone number mapping service for academia run by NRENs (national research and education networking organisations) and coordinated by TERENA. NRENum.net uses special DNS (Domain Name System) record types to translate a telephone number into a URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) that can be used in Internet communications. It provides a solution for seamless dialling interconnection between multiple video communication infrastructures based on SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) or H.323 protocols, and it facilitates services such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), videoconferencing and telepresence.

The GÉANT project's eduCONF task supports and facilitates the use and adoption of videoconferencing at a pan-European level across the NREN community. The eduCONF team developed 'eduCONF Direct Dialling (eDDi)' - an innovative dialling scheme that creates virtual numbers with short, non-repeated digits for centralised call routing in the videoconferencing infrastructure. By making the videoconferencing gatekeepers ENUM (E.164 Number Mapping) protocol-enabled and allowing eDDi numbers to be listed in ENUM-type DNS trees such as NRENum.net, the eduCONF domain can be reached by other videoconferencing and telephony systems' users.

The working group is jointly coordinated by the eduCONF task leader, Rui Ribeiro (FCCN), and the NRENum.net service coordinator, Péter Szegedi (TERENA).

Agreed actions

In order to achieve the mutual objective of unified dialling between eduCONF's virtual eDDi numbers and other systems, NRENum.net will seek ways to legitimate virtual numbers so that they can be delegated to the NRENum.net tree without the need for a policy change: the current service policy in principle does not allow this. The NRENum.net Operations Team will create a virtual NRENum.net sub-tree to be used for testing.

Meanwhile, eduCONF will ensure that virtual GDS and eDDi numbers are populated in the virtual NRENum.net sub-tree and will promote the use of NRENum.net as the global uniform dialling solution for video communications.
