Network Security Training


About the training

In this comprehensive course participants will learn how to implement security policies, how to select and operate security tools needed in daily network management and how to operate CERTS/CSIRTS in GÉANT environment.

Training Objectives

This workshop is the first workshop of three planned in 2014, devoted to NRENs personnel in Eastern Europe. It aims at training/educating NRENs and their customers personnel (mainly NOCs) in basic techniques and the latest developments on Network Security. After following the workshop participants will:

  • understand the fundamentals of network security - the common threats and basic protection techniques
  • know what tool and how to use to monitor and diagnose network security
  • understand the roles and responsibilities of CERT/CSIRT, working methodology, communication with peers, tools and techniques
  • Understand the possibilities of protecting network users anonymity
  • are able to implement basic intrusion detection system and detect/disable intruders in the system
  • are able to formulate and implement security policy for their institution
  • understand the roles and responsibilities of CERT/CSIRT, working methodology, communication with peers, tools and techniques
  • understand the fundament

Prerequisites

Basic network knowledge

Training Outline:

  • Introduction to network security
  • Network security toolbox 1 and 2 (hands-on)
  • CERT/CSIRT operations in GEANT environment
  • DNS security
  • Intrusion Detection Systems – implementation and operations
  • Reflexive attacks (DNS, NTP, SNMP, etc) - prevention and mitigation
  • Step by step development of security policy for educational institution
  • [Federations] Centralized authentication/authorization services for NRENs
  • WiFi 802.1X /WPA2 /EduRoam
