Journalists from radio, daily newspapers, specialised IT magazines and web portals were addressed by videoconference from Amsterdam by TERENA's Secretary General, Karel Vietsch, who outlined the history, structure and objectives of TERENA and previewed the topics and issues to be presented at the joint conference under the theme "User Opportunities - Network Challenges".
The videoconference was an opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of advanced, high-speed research and education networks. He explained that while the broadcast appeared to be like a CNN remote interview, the technology used by news makers is complicated and expensive, while the technology in use during the press conference is relatively simple and inexpensive. |
This technology is an excellent example of a service that is now available to users of the high-speed advanced networks of the research and education community, and will eventually be used in the commercial Internet and be available to all Internet users.
Traditionally, TERENA conferences have been oriented towards networks and networking technologies, while CARNet conferences have been oriented towards the users of the services. The needs of users are often very different and the joint conference will highlight these needs and the end-to-end technolgies required to deliver them.
John Dyer, TERENA's Chief Technical Officer outlined TERENA's technical programme and highlighted some of the important areas of research currently undertaken by the association, the various ways in which the programme is carried out through projects, task forces, workshops and meetings and some of the challenges ahead. |

Over 450 delegates from Europe, North America and worldwide will be arriving in Zagreb over the weekend to particpate in the conference and enjoy the hosptality of Zagreb, Croatia and the hosts of the conference, CARNet,the Croatian Academic and Research Network.
