Hi *,
Last TF Mobility meeting in Rome, I gave a presentation about a project
I'm working called "Active Monitoring eduroam Node" (AMeN). To fresh up
your memory a little recap.
We were looking into a little device from PC engines. The device is a
500Mhz AMD Geode LX800 with a X86 architecture, 256MB of RAM and 2GB of
Compact Flash storage. On this device we are running pfSense, a stripped
FreeBSD version with an webGUI. I showed you a little part of the script
back in October. After that, I continued developing the node and the
script.
In November the first final version was ready. After that I start
testing on a larger scale. After that was finished I contacted a few
institutions with the question if they want to participate in a test. In
total we got 6 responses. However one institution withdraw because they
don't have eduroam at the moment.
After sending them the nodes the testing could begin. After a few days
the first results where in. I configured the node in a way that it would
do a scan every 20 minutes. After a few days I noticed that not all
incoming results were complete. After a lot of debugging en try and
error I found a thread on a forum with similar problems. I seemed that
our OpenVPN version had a bug, which cost the OpenVPN to disconnect.
Unfortunately there was no time left to recall the nodes and send them
back in the field. Therefore we continued keeping this in mind.
Although there was a bug in OpenVPN the Proof of Concept was a success.
This doesn't mean that it is ready as a service yet. That's it for now.
Paul will spend some time about this project at the national updates.
Best regards,
Michael Rave
