Notes from the BoF about TF-VVC
9 June 2004, Rhodes, Greece
BoF to discuss the creation of TF-VVC, the Terms of Reference and work items was held during the TNC2004 on 9 June 2004 at 17:30 in the University of the Aegean, Rhodes, Greece. About 30 people attended the BoF.
Steve Williams (SW) chaired the meeting. He explained the idea to create a broad task force which would cover all topics about the voice, video and collaboration. The Terms of Reference of the task force would be without specific deliverables, but with work items, which could change during the lifetime of the task force. For each work area a working group would be formed with a leader responsible for the outcomes from this working group.
He asked those present about the topics they would be interested to work with. The following topics and areas were mentioned and discussed:
- solutions on how to stream video conferences
- GDS in national level, open gateways to the public telephone network
- How-Tos
- collaboration with similar activities un the US, Internet2
- SIP EDU project
- Multimedia, Instant Messaging and Presence (Jabber)
People asked about the formal side of the task force, i.e. working groups, meetings, deliverables. EV, SW, Valentino Cavalli (VC) and Baiba Kaskina explained these topics according to the ToR. The intention would be organise at least one general face-to-face meeting per year where people could share their results and inform others about their work. At least three additional meetings per year would be organised via videoconference. Working groups would be free to coordinate their work in the most convenient way for them.
The task force should focus on a collaborative effort, bringing together people with the same interests and problems so that they could work on them and could share the results and/or experiences with the rest of the community. br> TERENA would help with coordinating the effort, disseminating the results and offering the assistance (website, mailinglists, meeting support, etc.) Part of the coordination effort would be to liaise with other TERENA task forces, e.g. TF-AACE, TF-Mobility.
It was suggested to link the most important results form the TF-Netcast task force directly from the TF-VVC webpage to avoid browsing the old webpages.
VC proposed to continue the discussion in the TF-VVC mailing list and to organise another meeting via video conference before 1 September 2004 to finalise the new ToR. The date of the meeting would be set later.
