  • E-Infrastructures: building on the past, preparing the future (June 2010)

    This presentation was made to the E-IRG Workshop 17 June 2010. It displays the change in emphasis between FP6 and FP7 in terms of funding of topics and move from infrastructure to user community support. It goes on to explore the new political landscape in terms of the Conclusions of the Competitive Council and the EU2020 Digital Agenda. It concludes with details of the planned 95 million euro call 9 which closes 23 November 2010.
  • A Digital Agenda for Europe: Communication from the European Commission (May 2010)

    This 41 page document provides and overarching framework action items and key targets for the period 2010-2012. The introductory text states that: "The overall aim of the Digital Agenda is to deliver sustainable economic and social benefits from a digital single market based on fast and ultra fast internet and interoperable applications". The document is a must read for networkers. The Digital Agenda for Europe is one of the seven flagship initiatives of the Europe 2020 Strategy, set out to define the key enabling role that the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) will have to play if Europe wants to succeed in its ambitions for 2020.   • Executive Summary of US National Broadband Plan (March 2010)

    This five page summary by the US-FCC explains that broadband is a foundation for economic growth, job creation, global competitiveness and a better way of life for American citizens. It proposes four ways in which the US government should influence the broadband ecosystem: Robust Competition; Efficient Allocation and Management of Assets; Reform of the Universal Service Mechanisms; Reform Laws, Policies Standards and Incentives to maximise benefits of broadband.   • Conclusions on the future of information and communication technologies research, innovation and infrastructures

    This document is the output of the 2982nd COMPETITIVENESS (Internal market, Industry and Research) Council of the European Union meeting. The first three pages of the document look to previous decisions and actions. In remaining three pages the council (amongst other things): invites the Commission to examine areas where public-private partnerships can accelerate innovation; invites Member States and the Commission to explore how to extend the benefits of e-Infrastructures to industrial research and innovation, to public services and to SMEs and; explore governance models for e-Infrastructures that enable the provision of efficient, seamless and technologically leading public services for research Europe-wide, in consultation with the e-IRG, where appropriate.
  • Austrailian National Broadband Network (April 2009)

    This joint minsterial press release announces the establishment of a new company to build and operate a new super fast National Broadband Network. The network is intended to connect 90 percent of all Australian homes, schools and workplaces with broadband services with speeds up to 100 megabits per second. The Government will be the majority shareholder of this company, but significant private sector investment in the company is anticipated. In initial government investment is planned to be AU$4.7 billion (around 3.3 billion euro at 2010 exchange rate).
