Further Information
Simple pronunciation rules for Slovenian: the check marks on letters c, s and z (č, š, ž) make letters that are pronounced as ch (as in "check"), sh (as in "shine") and zh (as in "dr. Zhivago") respectively, letter j is pronounced as the English y (as in "yell"). English is most widely spoken foreign language, followed by German and Italian.
Weather at the beginning of April is mostly mild (5-14°C), with frequent rain showers. Check this page again before you leave for the weather forecast (local, BBC, CNN). Temperatures in the coastal area are usually a few degrees higher.
Currency and payments
The local currency is called the Slovenian Tolar (SIT). Exchange rates vary on a daily basis, so check closer to the time to achieve an accurate conversion. You can exchange money at hotels, banks, post offices or exchange offices (exchange rates can vary). Credit cards are accepted at most places (MasterCard and Visa, not so often American Express and Diners). ATMs ("Bankomat") accept Cirrus/Maestro cards and most also accept credit cards for withdrawals (MasterCard and Visa). Tips are not expected (service charges and taxes are included in the bill), although it is customary to round up the bill or tip extra in a restaurant or a bar if you are pleased with the service.
Slovenia will be adopting the Euro in January of 2007. Some prices may be labeled in both SIT and Euros, but prices in Euros are just indicative and may not be based on the current exchange rates.
